Reinout van Schilfgaarde received his MD at the University of Groningen in 1972 and his surgical training at the University Hospital of Leiden in 1978, where he served as assistant and associate professor of surgery until 1986. His clinical expertise was general surgery with focus on vascular and transplant, the subject of his PhD research in 1978, with special attention to pancreas and islet in diabetics. In 1984 he led the first clinical pancreas transplant in The Netherlands. In 1986 he was appointed Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Groningen University and Hospital. He has chaired the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sports’s task group for diabetes care. He is President of the Netherlands Diabetes Federation and chairman of the Foundation for Quality of Care for COPD.
