CALLIOPE, the European multi-stakeholder platform for eHealth interoperability

Connected health and sustainable eHealth services are high priorities on the European agendas. CALLIOPE, as the European multi-stakeholder platform for eHealth interoperability is a key enabler for trusted eHealth services across Europe.

The CALLIOPE network activities focus on producing value for decision makers in the field of eHealth. It is a targeted effort to establish an appropriately governed, composed and structured open forum. It supports Member States to implement interoperable eHealth solutions in close collaboration with the key stakeholders: users, industry, and payers.

CALLIOPE was initiated in June 2008 as a Thematic Network by 6 Health Administrations, 13 Competence centres and 9 EU level professional organisations representing physicians, pharmacists, patients, industry and health insurers. By February 2010, the CALLIOPE Network was joined by an additional 8 Health care Administrations, 3 health professional organisations and 1 Competence centre, thus representing today 22 EU and EFTA countries.

Over the past year these partners established an open co-operation platform bringing together the needed competences and expertise to support EU level planning and actions:

• CALLIOPE has established a process for the elaboration of a European interoperability roadmap.
• CALLIOPE reflects on the EC Interoperability Recommendation and its deployment as well on best practice examples in EU member states – thus also establishing synergies for supporting the implementation of the upcoming roadmap.
• CALLIOPE follows up closely on standardisation organisations and interoperability initiatives and collaborates in the framework of the M403 mandate.
• The collaboration initiative between CALLIOPE and the EU-Large Scale Pilot epSOS (CALLepSO) has proven to be a useful platform to ensure appropriate and early involvement of member state competent organisations and key EU stakeholders not participating in the epSOS consortium in the various stages of the project.
